Health Promotion

Live Well PEI is a government health promotion framework that focuses on protecting the health and wellness of Islanders, by preventing disease and injury. In essence, health promotion is all about helping the population gain control over and improve their health. Canada , along with several other nations use the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion, which was released by the World Health Organization in 1986. The Charter includes five core areas for health promotion:

  1. Building healthy public policy

  2. Creating supportive environments

  3. Strengthening community action

  4. Developing personal skills

  5. Reorienting health services to focus more on prevention

The Wellness Report

Recently, Live Well PEI has released the 2025 Prince Edward Island Wellness Report. This 34-page report tracks and summarizes public health actions strategies to help prevent chronic disease. There are five key ideas highlighted by the report; Breathe Well, Choose Well, Eat Well, Move Well, and Feel Well.

"Breathe Well" focuses on lung health and initiatives for helping islanders quit smoking or vaping. In this section of the report, the goal was set to help 6000 islanders improve respiratory health by living tobacco-free. Eleven initiatives were set to improve the lung health of youth and adults alike, by assisting Islanders in smoking cessation. The two main ideas in "Breathe Well" are to prevent smoking and vaping before it starts, and to help Islanders quit if they already use nicotine products.

"Choose Well" centers on supporting the island's population to reduce alcohol use. This area of the report set the goal to empower 7000 Islanders to improve their health by reducing their alcohol consumption. Six initiatives were released aiming to assist the population in reducing alcohol use, with the overall message regarding drinking alcohol being simply "Less is Best".

"Eat Well" concentrates on nutrition, and helping islanders make healthier food choices. In this category of the report, the goal was set to help 18,000 island residents adopt healthier diets. Twelve initiatives were carried out in order to improve the nutrition habits of Islanders of all ages. There are three overall goals included in "Eat Well", including helping the population have a balanced diet that follows Canada's Food Guide, reducing added sugar, salt, and fat, and ensuring islanders have access to enough nutritious food.

"Move Well" targets physical activity levels and aiding Islanders to improve their health by living a more physically active lifestyle. With "Move Well" the goal was set to help 20,000 Islanders increase their physical activity levels, and 28 initiatives were carried out across PEI. The "Move Well" section of the report encourages Islanders to follow the Canadian 24 Hour Movement Guideline, which promotes three key ideas:

  • Physical Activity - Getting at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per week, and engaging in resistance training at least twice per week

  • Sleep - Getting 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night

  • Sedentary Behavior - Having less than 3 hours of recreational screen time and breaking up long periods of sitting as much as possible

"Feel Well" zeroes in on mental health and wellbeing for Islanders. The two core ideas concepts included in "Feel Well" are to encourage a healthy lifestyle that strengthens people's bodies, minds, and interpersonal connections, as well as creating supportive and equitable environments to promote mental health and wellness among Island residents. This section of the report set the goal to empower 9000 Island residents to improve mental health and 12 initiatives were set out.

Conclusion

In summary, the Live Well PEI 2025 Prince Edward Island Wellness report touches on health promotion in several important areas, such as alcohol and tobacco use, nutrition, physical activity, and mental wellbeing.
