
Semaglutides - How They Can be Used Safely and Effectively

The recent approval of semaglutide products in Canada is likely to increase access to medications such as Ozempic and related substances. Semaglutides work by mimicking the naturally occurring GLP-1 hormone, which helps regulate blood glucose, slows gastric emptying, reduces appetite, lowers caloric intake and influences significant weight loss. For the most effective results, resistance training should be considered a foundational component of any GLP-1 treatment program. Strength training provides mechanical stimulus necessary to preserve skeletal muscle during periods of caloric restriction and rapid weight loss. Emerging evidence shows that combining GLP-1 medications with regular resistance exercise and adequate dietary protein intake helps maintain lean mass, preserve functional strength, and support resting metabolic rate. This is particularly important for older adults, who are already at greater risk of age-related muscle loss. Rather than viewing semaglutides as a stand-alone solution, healthcare professionals increasingly recommend pairing these medications with progressive resistance training two to four times per week and sufficient protein intake to maximize fat loss while minimizing the loss of muscle tissue.
This past May, Health Canada authorized the first semaglutide injections, making Canada the first G7 country to approve versions of the drug. Usage is expected to increase among people managing type 2 diabetes and obesity while recent clinical trials have demonstrated average reductions of approximately 15% body weight when combined with lifestyle modifications. While these medications can produce meaningful improvements in weight, blood sugar control, and cardio metabolic health, they are not without risks. Common adverse effects are gastrointestinal specific, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. More serious concerns include gallbladder disease, pancreatitis, severe dehydration, and abdominal obstruction. Since GLP-1 medications substantially reduce appetite, users may unintentionally consume insufficient calories and protein, causing a loss of muscle mass alongside fat mass during rapid weight loss. Research has shown that a meaningful proportion of total weight lost can come from lean tissue rather than adipose tissue, raising concerns about long-term strength, function, and metabolic health if preventive strategies are not implemented. Therefore, combining GLP-1treatment with resistance training will help ensure more effective results.
